Tips for Giving Wisely
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is a collective of passionate individuals who want to do something about MS now. This means we actively raise funds to provide programs and services for people with MS and to fund research to move us closer to a world free of multiple sclerosis. Our organization is well-respected for its fiscal responsibility, its sensitivity to donor requests, and its responsiveness to the individual needs of the more than one million people it serves each year. Below are some "wise giving tips" that we have compiled from groups such as the Better Business Bureau. We encourage you to follow these suggestions and give wisely to move us closer to a world free of MS.
- Do not send cash; make a contribution by check payable to the charity.
- Keep records of your donations (receipts, canceled checks and bank statements). Note: "Tax Exempt" means the organization does not have to pay taxes. "Tax Deductible" means the donor may be able to deduct contributions to the organization.
- Do not be fooled by names looking impressive or closely resembling names of well-known organizations.
- Be wary of appeals that are long on emotion but short on what the charity will do to address needs.
- Watch out for excessive pressure of on-the-spot donations. Be wary of any request to send a "runner" to pick up the contribution.
- Do not give your credit card number, bank account number of any other personal financial information to any unknown solicitors. Ask them to provide you with written information on the charity's programs and finances.
- Find out what the charity intends to do with any excess contributions remaining after they have funded specific activities targeted.
- Ask reasonable questions such as: How much of your gift will be given directly to the appeal? How much will go toward administrative costs, other programs and fund raising costs?
